Photo Tips: Fill The Frame

Share

One of the easiest tips to improve your images is to fill the frame with your subject. It doesn’t matter if its a person, animal or object, but the more you can see the main subject the better.

Of course like all rules there are times when you don’t want to do this. Especially if your are trying to show an environment or get across a different feel from the image.

Photo Tips: Rule of Thirds

Share

Most people who do some photography or paint or graphic design will know about the rule of thirds. For those that don’t, here we go. This not the best sample, but it has defining points that are easy to illustrate with.

Our original image:

If you take your image and draw an even tic-tac-toe grid on it it will divide the image into nine blocks. The “rule” states that the key spots are where the lines intersect. In the image below you can see the lines and where they intersect.

So using the lines as a guide we will crop in and place the trees on the left on a line and the fallen trees near the bottom horizon, another sweet spot.

Now, you can see on our final composition that the image is much more pleasing and seems to flow more.

You can also use this rule on portraits, by shooting vertical and placing  the eyes in the top intersections.

Of course the  “rules” are merely guides, and can be broken or used when needed.

Here is a good example of the use of rules of thirds:

Can you spot the other “rules” used in this image?
